The State of Engagement™: Malcontents

The Malcontent has low understanding and low connection to your organisation, and isn’t likely to feature on your radar. However, that doesn’t mean you can just sit back and do nothing.

I don’t care – it’s going to happen anyway, so as long as I don’t lose my job, I’ll put up with it.

The Malcontent is the polar opposite of the Champion – with low understanding and low connection to the organisation. They are unlikely to register on your radar of problem areas since they will not be very vocal in their disengagement, as long as nothing directly affects them.

But that doesn’t mean you can just sit back and do nothing. For the very fact that Malcontents exist is a problem in itself. Why are they so disengaged? Why don’t they have more of a connection to the business? Is it just all about the pay cheque to them?

At Dialogue, we’ve seen the percentage of Malcontents in the organisations we’ve worked with range from as little as 1% to as high as 11%. Imagine that for a second – more than one in ten of the people in your business doesn’t care enough about it to care what you’re doing to make it better. Doesn’t feel good, does it?
