The State of Engagement™: Challengers
Challengers are aware of the impact of change on the organisation, and voice opinions usually rooted in their desire for a better overall connection.
‘I get it, but I’m not sure it’s being done the best way.’
Any opposition Challengers present is likely to be rooted in their desire to improve things. They clearly understand, but just can’t connect in a way the Champion does. They will use their communicative ability to constructively criticise to affect the change they want to see.
Challengers are a critical audience. Connect with them and you have a Champion. Fail to connect and you risk creating a Saboteur. Typically they make up between 5% and 8% of your organisation and are likely to be found anywhere. A small group perhaps, but well worth listening to.
All of this means that constructively engaging with them can deliver results – both in terms of engagement and overall organisational performance.
